The Rice Outlook and Situation (RO&S) forecasts were compared to the forecasts of a univariate Box-Jenkins (BJ) model. On balance, the RO&S forecasts had lower mean square forecast errors and lower mean absolute forecast errors than the BJ model forecasts. The differences in the squared and absolute forecast errors were not significant, however. Based on the concept of conditional efficiency as set forth by Granger and Newbold, it was found that the BJ forecasts did not add any information that might improve forecast accuracy beyond what was already incorporated in the RO&S forecasts. |

A version of multiattribute utility theory is evaluated as an aid to social decision making using an Australian case study. A multiattribute utility function is assessed over the descriptive, discrete decision alternatives of the decision problem rather than over the risky consequences of the attributes as in the standard approach. The evaluation is made first from the perspective of the decision analysts as a test of the feasibility of the method, and second, from the perspective of social decision makers as a test of the value of the analysis to them. Several difficulties arose in administering the procedure, and the decision makers were sceptical about the derived prescriptions. Nevertheless, the research findings appear to support the proposition that... |

Bio-economic models have not been extensively developed for the shellfish farming sector. However, this type of model could constitute a valuable analysis and assessment tool. Only the potential contribution of this kind of model in our knowledge of the evolution of production systems and marketing are discussed here. These models help comprehend the interactions between the strategies of the different players in the sector and also-on the level of individual businesses-between the shellfish farming sector, as well as the other economic activities that utilise shellfish farming areas, and the type of activity. In particular, it is possible to show the externalities that affect shellfish farming (for example, by revealing the relationships between nutrient... |

The analysis of the official statistics of commercialised production of oysters (.Crassostrea angutata and Crassostrea gigas ) is achieved from 1866 to 1984 in term of their numbers and weights for the bay of Marennes-Oleron. The number of sanitary labels, multiplied by the mean weight of a crate can also give out the commercialised production provided it is increased by the bias and decreased by the exterior production of the bay . Thus the production of Portuguese oysters is only 45 000 tons from 1948 to 1957 with a maximum of 52, 000 tons for respectively 70 000 tons and 280 000 tons for the statistics . AIso, after the epizooties of Crassostrea angulata the production, fell down to 25 000 tons in 1971 according to the number of sanitary labels... |

The Economic Emergency (EE) loan program, administered by the FmHA, was created by Congress in 1978. The primary purpose of the program was to provide credit to farmers who were unable to obtain credit from normal lenders due to economic stress. Over six billion dollars of EE loans were extended nationally during fiscal years 1978 through 1981. This paper examines the allocation of EE loans at the state level and the expansionary effect of the program on farm credit markets. Empirical evidence is provided that EE funds were allocated to states consistently with the general criteria cited in the development of the EE program and that the EE program expanded farm credit markets rather than displacing loans from other sources. |

A two equation model is developed to examine jointly the determinants of household food stamp program participation and program effects on food expenditures. The model is unique in that it postulates that the participation decision is based on a cost-benefit ratio, selected socioeconomic characteristics, and the potential for increasing both food and nonfood expenditures. Data from the 1977-78 USDA Nationwide Food Consumption Survey Supplemental Low Income Sample is used to estimate the model. Findings suggest that households, in making the participation decision place equal value on the potential for increasing their food and nonfood expenditures. However, at the margin, bonus stamp income is found to have more than twice the impact of money income on... |

Seven species of Syllidae (Annelida, Polychaeta) inhabiting colonies of the bryozoan Schizoporella unicornis (Johnston), a common species on the beaches of Ubatuba and São Sebastião, São Paulo State, Brazil are described: Exogone occidentalis Westheide, 1974; Haplosyllis spongicola (Grube, 1855); Opistosyllis corallicola Hartmann-Schröder, 1965; Syllis gracilis (Grube, 1840); Trypanosyllis taeniaformis (Haswell, 1866); Typosyllis maculata Imajima, 1966 and Typosyllis variegata (Grube, 1860). Among these, E. occidentalis, O. corallicola, T. taeniaformis and T. maculata are cited for the first time for the Brazilian coast. The most abundant of these species was S. gracilis. |
